AAC vocabulary created for different languages
Symboloud is an Android augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app. Users select cells containing symbols and written words to create or speak messages. Families, therapists, educators and support teams can also adapt the grids to reflect each person’s identity, relationships, routines and priorities.
First, users can choose a grid size that balances accessible cells with a useful amount of language. As the grids increase in size, they add vocabulary, grammar, topic depth and more direct routes from the main screen. However, users do not have to progress through every grid. Instead, each person can choose the grid that provides the right balance of access and communication.
A Symboloud language pathway does not simply translate an English vocabulary word for word. Languages differ in their verb forms, pronouns, word order, grammar, social expressions and culturally relevant vocabulary. For example, one language may express through a verb form what English communicates with a separate pronoun and verb. Therefore, each pathway must reflect how people naturally communicate in that language.
In addition, every language page explains the organisation of its vocabulary, colour system, symbols, Android speech and available grid sizes. Each page also provides links to relevant downloads, language maps and supporting design information.
