How to use Symboloud
Use this guide to learn how to use Symboloud and personalise the app on an Android phone or tablet. The full instructions appear in the PDF below, while this page provides a short overview of what the guide contains.
The guide explains how to choose and open a starting grid, move between vocabulary folders and use the main communication controls. It also covers editing words and spoken messages, changing symbols and colours, adding photographs and selecting one of the voices available on the Android device.
You will also find instructions for importing downloadable vocabulary and complete Symboloud grids. The backup guidance explains how to export a .symboloud file, save it safely and restore it when required. Always create a backup before replacing the base grid because selecting another base grid completely replaces the current grid and any edits made to it.
The instructions apply across the complete Symboloud grid family, from Easy Access 4 to Core Communication 90. Although the number of cells and available words changes between grids, the main navigation, editing, importing and backup controls remain consistent. Families, AAC users, speech and language therapists, teachers and support staff can therefore use the same guide when setting up or maintaining a personalised communication system.
You can read the complete instructions in the viewer below. Alternatively, download the Symboloud instructions PDF for offline use or printing. Keep a copy with the device for quick reference when making changes.
For ready-made UK English vocabulary, visit Core Grids. For additional community and topic vocabulary, browse Downloads. If you do not yet have the app, get Symboloud from Google Play.
